Monday to Friday, 9-5, I am the Art Editor of West Magazine. Towards the end of last year we were invited behind the scenes at St Michael's Mount. I travelled with one of our staff writers and spent 24 hours on The Mount with my camera, getting a feel for it's many moods and a taste of what life is like for those who live and work there. It is a life ruled by the tides, the wind means good hair days are a rare triumph, and lashing rain and squinty-eye-bright sun in the same hour aren't uncommon. The castle has rooms rammed with treasures made for losing days in, and views of the most magnificent garden made for losing months in. Also, the pasties are stuffed with filling. Maybe this is why everyone I met seemed brimming with a smile-at-strangers easy content, or maybe it is because of the chocolate in The Mount shop (HANDS DOWN the best darn salted treat that has ever passed my lips.
